Audible.com audio content playable on iPod. Saw this Audible.com/iTunes/iPod news (also here):

"Audible officially announced today that audible.com, its spoken audio service, is now available on Apple's iTunes and iPod. Audible.com features audio editions of books, newspapers, magazines, radio programs and original shows. Users can download audio for desktop playback, CD burning, or transfer to their iPod."

Okay, too interesting to pass up. New customer, now. Cool!

But what's up with Audible.com's use of Javascript for every link? The links all look like
javascript:linkThis('/store/myLibrary.jsp')

This is needlessly inconvenient and annoying (AFAICT it makes opening links in new Mozilla tabs impossible); it flies in the face of Mark's weblog accessibility counsel:

"The scourge of web design is the "javascript:" link, a pseudo-link that executes a piece of Javascript code when you click on it . . . Why is it a problem? Because 11% of Internet users don't use Javascript for one reason or another, including many disabled users whose browsers simply don't support it. These pseudo-links won't work for them; use real links instead."

Resurrecting Classic fonts in Mac OS X redux. I moved my Classic system folder in Mac OS X and once again lost access to my Classic fonts. I got them back easily enough, but it took an extra step.

I added this extra step to my May 11 post called Kill the font cache to resolve font problems.

Googling for links to your site. I'm reminded today that Google can tell you what pages link to yours, For example, Google reports these sites link to this Radio weblog:

Google: link:radio.weblogs.com/0100629/

[2002-12-07 update: Or now,
Google: link:maikimo.net/radio/ ]

Short rant: Apple's .Mac fee clobbering mac.com email accountApple has renamed iTools to .Mac and decided to charge $99.95/year for it. There goes my Mac.com email address. How needlessly inconvenient for me, and dumb, dumb, dumb for Apple.

Here's what I just sent on their .Mac feedback page.

Keep basic set of services free

I understand needing to charge for the full range of iTools->.Mac services. But since iTool's inception, I've ~never used any of its services except my Mac.com email account. So I know .Mac absolutely will not be worth $99/year to me. Changing my mac.com email address at all the places I've used it will, however, be a major PITA.

I strongly believe you need to implement a free Lite version of .Mac that includes, at minimum, the POP email account. You then have a [chance] of wooing people to upgrade later, whereas now you're just pissing off existing customers, mostly eliminating the possibility that any of us will ever buy the full .Mac service.

Thank you. Mike

Of course, after I sent this, I now see cooler heads (like Bill and Chris) assessing the total .Mac service as a bargain. Hmmm.

Outliner blogging. Hmmm, I'm finding it easier to capture notes of interest throughout the day in my Blog Topic Ideas outline, as compared to actually posting them in the normal way. (I'm simply editing an OPML outline in Radio, which is automatically rendered to HTML (and upstreamed) via Marc Barrot's very cool activeRenderer tool.

How much downside would there be to having the main blog page be an activeRendered outline instead of conventional posts?
