Microsoft EULA (WinXP, Win2k) agreement permits PC takeover. In post The Bell Hath Tolled, Jeremy Bowers writes concerning the Microsoft WinXP SP1 and Win2000 SP3 EULA (end-user license agreement) that allows for "provid[ing] upgrades or fixes to the OS Product that will be automatically downloaded to your computer":
"Spread the word: Microsoft operating systems are no longer a viable option for a computer owner. Anybody that agrees to this EULA provision has forfeited the freedom of the PC (Personal Computer) and entered into bondage to Microsoft . . .
"I strongly recommend to everyone who cares about their computer that they examine alternatives to Microsoft at this point, and go with one."
I agree, utterly. I find Debian GNU/Linux hard to beat on PC hardware, and the Unix-y goodness of Mac OS X on Apple hardware is my favorite choice of all. (Debian on Apple hardware is very nice, too.)

Ars Technica review of Mozilla 1.0. Characteristically good Ars Technica review of Mozilla 1.0. On review's last page,
"If you are a Netscape 4.x user, upgrade yesterday. Mozilla is much more stable, renders websites better, and does things quicker. Mozilla won't choke on random bits of HTML like older Netscape versions will, and it's capable of handling advanced features of web development that were previously unavailable to Netscape browsers."
