Installing Perl 5.8.0 in Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar. I've built Perl 5.8.0 in Jaguar to replace its rather old 5.6.0, following Morbus Iff's wonderful instructions. I'm opting to precisely use the original Apple locations as Morbus mentions.

Incomplete list of steps:

  1. Backed up existing perl 5.6.0 pieces as mentioned
  2. wget http://mirror.hiwaay.net/CPAN/src/perl-5.8.0.tar.gz
  3. Changed perl-5.8.0/hints/darwin.sh to
    privlib='/System/Library/Perl'
  4. Add "export LC_ALL=C" to my ~/.bashrc.
  5. ./Configure -de -Dprefix=/usr -Dperladmin=mwjames@myhostname -Dcf_email=mwjames@example.com -Dotherlibdirs=~/Library/Perl
  6. make ; make test ; make install
  7. Attended to several out-of-date fink XS modules as discussed at
