Larry Wall on role of religion. I love the thoughtful way Larry Wall answers this question from a Slashdotter (scroll down ~33% to question 7):

"Q: I remember reading at some point that you are a Christian, and there have been suggestions that some of your early missionary impulses (a desire to do good, help others) are perhaps part of the zeal you have put into Perl over the years . . .

"Please tell us how in the world a scientific or at least technical mind can believe in God, and what role religion has played in your work on Perl."

Scott's The fog of war. Wow, this is good--Scott Rosenberg's Salon piece, The fog of "war" ("We don't know who's winning, because President Bush--for political reasons--has never defined our aims or enemies").

BTW, this story is listed as a Salon Premium exclusive; I've found signing up to be well worth the $30 cost.

Counterpunch: Of George and Jesus. John Farr points to Ben Tripp's excellent CounterPunch article, Of Jesus and George: Bush's Boss is a Jewish Carpenter:

"You won't find a guy who is more the inverse of Jesus than George W. Bush . . .

"Bush indisputably means Jesus Christ is his role model, and this should be cause for concern. A guy who has presided over scores of state executions and laughed about it to the press should probably align himself with Pontius Pilate, not Jesus . . .

"The insidious thing people like Bush do is to take the Bible literally and fudge around the edges, where things hadn't been invented at the time of the writing, rather than acknowledge that the entire work is full of metaphors from which lessons can be drawn (which, if you believe in the lessons, is the whole beauty of the thing)."

Yes.
